Was Jimmy Carter Predicted To Win The 1976 Presidential Elections?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

When Jimmy Carter first decided to run for President and announced his decision to his family his mother's first question was: President of What? Jimmy Carter was not known in the country. Only 2 percent name recognition is what he had. But things soon started to turn in his favour. The Nixon scandal was still pretty much fresh in people's mind and Carter's image as an outsider to Washington started to work in his favour. Carter started to capitalize on this fact by attacking Washington repeatedly in his speeches. He won the Iowa Caucuses and the primaries in New Hampshire straight through. In the south where people expected George Wallace of Alabama to win Carter used a moderate image to sweep the region clean. In the north where he was not expected to be very successful he played up to the rural religious sections and the urban liberal ones. Soon he was unstoppable.
