Dr Carl Rogers was an American psychologist . He was born in 1902 and died in 1987. Influenced by the ideas of another American psychologist John Dewey, Rogers developed a form of therapy known as person centred therapy. He joined the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children as in 1928. His work there led him to conclude that problems between parents and children were often the result of the problems in relationships in the early years of both parent and child. Person centred therapy is based on the idea that everyone has vast resources for understnding themselves, for altering their ideas about themselves, their attitudes towards the world and their own behaviour. The therapy involves the client talking and the therapist asking a few questions to stimulate reflection and exploration. Roger's ideas were taken up by the Marriage Guidance Council in the UK (Now known as "Relate") and did not become widely studied until the 1960s.
