Which Novel Is The Inspiration For TV Shows Room 101 And Big Brother?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Both these ideas came from George Orwell's novel 1984, published in 1949. Its most famous line "Big Brother is Watching You" is the slogan on the posters of the all-powerful leader of Oceania, a future region in which London is known as "Airstrip one." Citizens are watched constantly through TV screens in their homes, and no action is free from state interference. In fact (just as in the Channel 4 show) we never meet Big Brother; it is not even certain that he exists, though his power is everywhere.

Winston Smith rebels against the state, writing "Down With Big Brother" in his diary. For this and other "crimes" he is sent to the Ministry of Love, where he is tortured. When he still holds out, he is taken to the dreaded Room 101 which contains "The worst thing in the world." Here, people are confronted with whatever they most fear (in Winston's case, rats) which inevitably breaks down their resistance.
