The question here is are you going to format the drive or partition the drive? If you perform a format then yes it will erase the informtion on the drive. If you are going to partition the drive then no it will not erase the info unless you try and partition the drive into partitions that will not fit the data stored on the drive. If that makes since then I would suggest you backup all your data to an external source before you begin whether you format or partition just to be safe. Remember backup your data before you begin. How2computer.com has some great tutorials on using the Windows OS.

I format my computer all the time, and yes you will lose everything on it.
But I suggest that if you are going to do this yes backup all your data on a
data CD or a data DVD, that way you can re enter it back on you newly formatted hard drive. Also, if you are going to re-format, might I suggest that you obtain a program called " Killdisk" this is located at www.killdisk.com. There is a free version that runs a one pass of all zeros
on you drive, then use your format disk that comes with your computer to
return everything back to factory settings. If you do this killdisk helps to
sanatize your drive first, and there is a version of killdisk that you can purchase, and it will run in "GUTMAN" which is high security.
