How Do You Tell The Difference Between Silver Plated And Sterling Silver?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are 2 ways. First, if it is genuine sterling silver, it should have the stamp .925 somewhere on the piece. If it does not, i think it's safe to assume it is NOT sterling silver, but rather some kind of base metal plated with silver.
If you can somehow cut the piece, it should become evident very quickly whether it's sterling - if the inside is a different colour, then your pieces is most likely plated. If it is the same colour through and through, it's sterling silver.
