Why Did The NAACP Membership Increase After WWII?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Whites in the military and in industry were allowed or forced by common goals / enemies to fight opposing forces bent on racial and ethnic "purity" and genocide. Our troops returned with new knowledge and respect for minorities and a distaste for Arian supremist hatred. Where it continued in the south (U.S.), the majority of lawyers and lawmakers were Jewish and supported legislation and legal assistance to those victimized by prejudice, bigotry, and hatred with  far too many similarities to Nazi and Fascist ideologies. Women experienced similar legal and political backing from lawmakers and unions. During the 60's and 70's, soldiers of conflicting beliefs and backgrounds found themselves handcuffed to each other in order to witness first-hand, that common goals and enemies would erase prejudice and ignorance while  encouraging cooperation, tolerance, and respect for those whose differences were discovered to be trivial or unimportant when compared with needs for survival and victory. We were all old enough to remember that 66 Million people died in a war born of hatred and ignorance. All the above fostered courage and support for NAACP enrolments and Civil Rights Legislation.
