What Does Rubidium Mean?

The name Rubidium has its origin in Latin and is taken from the word rubidus. Rubidus means dark red or deepest red. Rubidium is a metal. In Spectroscopy, This metal gives bright red lines. Hence, it was named Rubidium. It was discovered by Robert Busen and Gustav Kirchoff in 1861. It was discovered by applying methods of spectroscopy. This was obtained as a salt along with salts of Group I elements (Alkali metals). They precipitated it from spring waters.
Though emits red lines, it is a softy and silvery white element. This metal ignites spontaneously in air. Its reactions with water are also violent. It melts at 38.89 °C and boils at 688°C. It has electronic and chemical applications. In Biology, it is used to study the potassium ion channels.
