Can I Break A Lease If The Area Is Unsafe And Other Tenants Are Dangerous?

I have lived in the same place for 2 years. My lease is up April 1st so I called the landlord and told him I would be out by the 1st. He calls me back a week in a half later and tells my that I have to pay a months rent because I didn't give in 30 days notice. Well I gave him 3 weeks. I don't want to renew because crime is getting really bad. My neighbor last month held his girlfriend hostage with a gun and our apartment are connected. I had to leave for the night.

In normal cases, you need to provide a 30 day notice before leaving. But in this case where security comes first, i think you should break the lease right away and should not worry about the payments.

IF YOUR LEASE EXPIRES ON APRIL 1ST YOU NEED NOT PROVIDE YOUR LANDLORD ANY NOTICE. SIMPLY MOVE OUT ON APRIL 1ST. GOOD LUCK TO YOU.
