What Are The Some Functions Of Hair?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Hair is always considered a major element of physical appeal.  Shiny and thick hair with a silky sheen is a physical attribute that shampoos all over the world claim to make their users achieve.

Besides the apparently physical allure of hair, there are some functions that it performs.  For starters, hair provides warmth and protection.  This function was more applicable in the prehistoric Stone Ages than it is now as the age that we live in has provided us with other artificial means of protection and warmth.  Nevertheless during those times, there was no concept of warm clothes and the only thing that warmed a person's body were hair that mostly covered their body.

There are organs in the body, which are sensitive enough to any kind of external stimulus.  These delicate organs are given protection by hair.  For example, the eye lashes, the hair in the nose and the hair in ears give enormous protection to these delicate organs, the outlets of which are prone to dangerous substances.

Another benefit concerning animals is that hair provides camouflage to them against those animals that are their enemies.  For instance, the northern hare develops a white coat in the winter to act as camouflage against snow.  Another function of animals' hair is the sensory nature that they are accoutered with, such as a cat's whiskers, which are as sensitive as sensory neurons.
