What Are Some Great Books On Theatre Directing? Are There Any Good Ones?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

There are indeed a great and good range of books on directing available, some are 'how to', some historical, some technical, some a mixture:

A Director Prepares (inspirational essays) by Anne Bogart
And Then You Act (more inspiration essays) by Anne Bogart
On Directing - Harold Clurman (sophisticated how to)
Directing a Play - McCaffrey (very basic how to)
Making Plays - Duncan Wu (how to work with playwrights)
Fifty Key Theatre Directors by Mittar and Shevtsova
The Director and the Stage (Ted Edward Brawn)
    Prospero's Staff - Charles Marowitz
Great Directors - Journey without End - Lev Dodin
    Stanislavski Directs - Nikolai Gorchakov
Friendly Enemies (sorry, can't remember the author)

Of course one cannot learn to direct from a book, one needs to learn formally, or at least with good actors, directing is a craft which must be built up over time, like any skill, there may be some who are naturally gifted, but what then?
