What Is A Single Malt?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The term Single refers to a whisky. It has to be made in one distillery and not blended with one from somewhere else. The word Malt refers to the ingredients which may only be: water and barley malt and nothing else fermentable. The malt will be infused with water, fermented with a yeast and the resulting brew distilled in a pot still.
If the drink is Scotch it means it was distilled and matured in Scotland. Outside the United Kingdom there is only one single malt made in Ireland and three or four produced in Japan.
These non Scottish whiskies carry an 'e' in the name - hence 'whiskey', but there is no 'e' in Scotch whisky.
Some malts are labelled 'Pure'. This term often indicates that the liqueur is the result of vatting together malt whiskies from several distilleries. It may be described on the label as vatted malt. These can represent excellent value for money but never indicate the origins of the separate malts in the blend, only the brand owner or blender.
