There were many goings on that the public was not aware of, many truths were kept hidden. I will share this Q with a couple of people who I know where there. Maybe they can give a more informed answer.

We actually sent military advisers into Viet Nam in 1954 and started adding armed troops a few years later. The US did not admit to the country that we were legally there until 1964 when President Johnson needed funds for more military might. So all in all Viet Nam lasted 21 years for us ending in 1975. Congress never declared it a "legal war"  as the US never recognized itself as being personally there, so how could we be in a war if we were never there? How did over 58,000 soldiers lose their life in something that was never declared a war but died on foreign soil? Our Government has like always can screw anything up its lays its hands on

We had " advisors" in Nam beginning in 1954 or 55, depending on what source you use. Eisenhower was just defeated in Korea and he viewed this as another similar scenario - plus our allied friend at that time was the French, who were knee deep in pastries in Nam and getting quite severely whipped. So off we went. Kennedy tried to sign a bill to get us out of Nam, but was shot before he could sign it. 1964 is considered the "official" date because that is when LBJ commited our troops full time with his stemming the tide of communism crap propaganda. Never mind that his family made millions selling oil to the South Vietnamese in the process. It was never declared an official war during it's duration. When I went there in 70, there was no talk of "victory". Just kill them before they kill you. Every officer I was assigned under gave the same instructions - " Stay alive and survive this hell - live to die another day". This is the only thing that makes my blood boil deep inside - we sacraficed so many lives, and colossal amount of wounded, for absolutely nothing. And we continue to follow this madness today - we never learn.
