Gastric Torsion is a potentially life threatening condition in dogs. It occurs when the stomach becomes twisted due to a sudden jump or fall. It is more common in larger breeds and it happens suddenly with no warning. Unfortunately a dog who does have Gastric Torsion does not have very long to live and surgery is often required immediately in order to save the dog. However, even with surgery the dog may still pass away and so it is an extremely serious condition.
It is only avoidable if you can stop the dog from making sudden jumps and movements which is obviously impossible. So, if you do suspect that your dog has gastric torsion you need to take them to the vets immediately. Symptoms could include the dog simply laying on the floor in distress, the stomach could become bloated and vomiting is also extremely common too. So always be aware of those symptoms and if you have a larger dog be prepared in case the worst does happen.

Thank you.
Gastric torsion is very life threatening but a sudden jump or fall is rarely the cause. It is caused by air entering the stomach, causing it to flip. This can be because a dog eats too fast, or drinks too soon after eating, or has a high level of exercise/play after eating. Older dogs are also apt to get it due to breathing difficulties. It occurs mostly (but not only) in large, deep chested dogs. If untreated quickly, death is inevitable.
Symptoms include restlessness, drooling, hard or distended stomach, retching with NO vomit or bile. Immediate veterinary care is needed.
