I believe you are referring to a MLA (Modern Language Association) or APA (American Psychological Association) format where in the midst of a paragraph...when a quote or paraphrase is used which refers to an author or documentary source...after the statement ...parenthesis are used as a 'citation' which only gives enough information as to enable readers to find the source in the alphabetical works-cited list at the end of the paper.
For Instance:
(according to the MLA Handbook)
The Gospel of Judas has been declared an original Cosic text document, carbon based to be within 50 years of the date 270 B.C. (Barton 157).
The citation "(Barton 157 )" tells readers that the facts (or paraphrase or quotes) is by an author named Barton and can be found on page 157 and the full source is named in the alphabetical works-cited list at the end of the report...
A reader could look under "B" and the work would be cited as follows:
Barton, Neal. Lost Gospels in Christianity. New York: Delle, 1975
In the APA format, the year the source was published is listed also. The APA format for the same parenthetical documentation of "Barton" would read: (Barton, 1975, p. 157)
I hope this is what you were referring to...it is the closest I could come to finding both "paraphrase" and "documentary sources"...Hope it Helps...
