    This is a tricky one. You are in a situation where a lack of management control and leadership has lead to an office environment that resembles a holiday camp more than a place of work.

    There's no easy way round this. You could raise the matter with your line manager, but this will not endear you to your co-workers. You could try popping a head set on and listen to music but you won't be able to hear the phone ringing and your fellows may think you rather aloof.

    The only sensible course of action is to raise the matter informally with your co-workers and say that the office environment is getting out of hand, everyone is taking advantage and the work's not getting done. It's now time to get real and get on with things before management come down with a heavy hand.

    Get across you are trying to be reasonable and wish to avoid a conflict with management which could have serious implications for you all. Only the most unreasonable of your co-workers will see that your suggestion is the lesser of two evils.
