What Is The Futures Market?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Futures as a means of financial trading have been around in one shape or another for thousands of years.

From the earliest days of civilization when farmers were first able to produce a surplus and exchange it for goods or money, futures trading - whether it was realised at the time or not - was brought into existence. At its most fundamental level, futures trading is therefore the bringing together of buyers and sellers to assist in business transactions.

Today, futures are what lubricate the wheels of industry in a national and global scale. Without the futures market just about everything we buy would be far more expensive. What the futures market does for the buyer and seller is smooth out the otherwise very real problems associated with price risk and credit. By doing so, futures help to buoy up market reliability, liquidity and efficiency, therefore lessening the overall volatility of the market itself. Without futures, many major parts of the global economy would be subject to unpredictable sea changes of fortune.
