    The Khmer Rouge was an extremist nationalist organization that ruled over Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. It is remember as one of the bloodiest and most brutal regimes in modern history. The term "Khmer Rouge," which was coined by the Cambodian head of state Norodom Sihanouk was later adopted in English.

    The Khmer Rouge was a Radical communist movement that came to power in Cambodia in 1975. The Khmer Rouge, was led by Pol Pot, and opposed the popular government led by Norodom Sihanouk. They gained support following the toppling of Sihanouk by Lon Nol in 1970, and following the US bombing of the countryside in the early 1970s. Lon Nol was ousted by the Khmer Rouge in 1975. Under their extraordinarily brutal regime starvation, torture, and executions were common, resulting in the deaths of one to two million people. The Khmer Rouge was finally overthrown in 1979 by the Vietnamese.
