Where Did The Surname Stiff Come From?

It's my surname and have not really known the meaning behind my surname. Would like to hear from anyone who knows the surname stiff and its meaning and origins. Some one once told me it came from the people who used to bury bodies in the old days when your surname was your job like smith for a black smith, apparently they used to call the dead bodies stiffs, and that's where graveyard workers got their name, but I've been told this isn't true though by others.

Stiff is a nickname from Middle English word, stiff meaning ‘rigid’,
‘inflexible’, hence a nickname for someone who had difficulty in
bending. The term was also used for referring to "resolute" and "steadfast" character/personality.

Top places of origin for Stiff are England, Ireland and Wales. However
their records are also found in Canada, Poland and Sweden.
