Philip Seymour Hoffman won the category of 'Performance of an Actor in a Leading Role' at the 78th Academy Awards, held in 2006. This was for the role of Truman Capote in the film 'Capote'.

Fellow nominees included Terence Howard in 'Hustle and Flow', Heath Ledger in 'Brokeback Mountain', Joaquin Phoenix in 'Walk the Line' and David Strathairn in 'Good Night and Good Luck'.

The film Capote follows the story of the life of author, Truman Capote, as he is writing the investigative classic 'In Cold Blood'. The book is a real-life account of two men who murder an innocent family in Kansas, after hoping that they would gain a fortune by robbing the Clutter's farm-home. The murderers spend several months on the run and are eventually hanged for the crime. Before their death, Capote spends a lot of time with the murderers, as research for his book. The film portrays the close relationship that Capote has with murderer Perry Smith.

Philip Seymour Hoffman had to imitate Capote's extraordinary voice for the role.
