Around 3000 people died in the incident. The majority of deaths were related to pulmonary edema. The symptoms of methyl isocyanate exposure include coughing, dyspnea, chest pain, eyelid edema, and unconsciousness. These effects caused acute lung injury, cardiac arrest, and death.
