ISDN is a term which is an acronymn for Intergrated Services Digital Network, it is used to send voice, fax, data, video and sound through a high speed connection, using exsisting copper wire telephone networks.
Intergrated access is it's function, and so ISDN modems are used, and are sold around the world to make this possible, and faster.
A very good site that can answer all the questions you may have about the technology and how it functions, can be found at www.multitech.com. This site has a very sound and easy to use structure, that has a dropdown page of all the questions anyone could ask about this system, and how it works.
