Alternative medications such as dietary suggestion, nutritional therapy, herbal therapy, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, biofeedback, hypnotherapy, massage therapy and light therapy are found to be effective in treating bulimia.

In dietary programme, it is always recommended for patients suffering from bulimia to have small amount of nutritious food in regular interval. Any such food such as sweet or junk food which provokes craving should be strictly avoided. The consumption of alcohol should be at minimum. The amount of salt in food or salty food should be restricted. To prevent deficiency of essential vitamin and minerals, multivitamin, especially vitamin B complex, vitamin C and mineral supplements, particularly zinc supplements (as the bulimia patients have zinc deficiency) should be prescribed.

Research has found there is a correlation of light to the bulimic episode. It has been observed that controlled exposure to the light can reduce the bulimic episodes.

Various hypnotherapists suggest that hypnotherapy may address the unconscious conflict attributing to the development of bulimia in an individual, hence may have the ability to resolve the issue from a deep-rooted level.
