What Is Cycling Life, Offset And Lag?

Please help me to define these control terminology...

Answer Question

"Cycling life" refers to the number of cycles a system can execute before failure. For example, the number of times a fan motor can start up and shut down before it fails.

"Offset" refers to the steady-state deviation from a set-point. You may set your cruise control to 60 mph, but it may actually run the car at 62 mph. The offset, in that case, would be 2 mph.

"Lag" refers to the time- or phase-delay associated with a control action or a control result. My furnace has a lag of quite a few seconds between the time the thermostat commands heat and the time warm air exits the ductwork. One result is that the temperature changes lag set-point changes by several minutes.
