No the sun is not a planet rather it is a star. It is classified as a G2-type star and the distance from the earth is 149,597,892 kilometers.

The sun is a star. It is located in our solar system roughly 2/3 of the way out from the center of our spiral galaxy, the milky way. It is out of the nucleus on one of the spiral arms.
