Where On Earth Are The Coldest Of All The Ecosystems?

Answer Question

3 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The coldest ecosystems on Earth are found at the North Pole and the South Pole. The North Pole is the northern end of the Earth's axis. The pole is covered by ice all year round, although small amounts melt during the warmest days of summer, when daylight lasts for 24 hours. In winter, the temperature drops to around -40 degree centigrade.

The South Pole is the southern end of the Earth's axis and is at the centre of the continent of Antarctica. It is even colder and more inhospitable than the North Pole, with an average temperature of -50 degrees centigrade. An extremely thick ice-cap covers the continent. The ice grows and moves slowly and parts of it are millions of years old.

Nothing can survive at the centre of the ice caps at the poles but some specialised animals manage to live at the edges. Just beyond the ice caps, the climate is a little warmer and some plants can grow.
