We Have 2 Teddy Bear Hamsters. How Can You Tell Between The Male And Female, And Do The Males Really Eat The Babies?

We got 2 teddy bear hamsters, they were suppose to be males. As you can tell, they are not. We don't know which is male, and which is female. We have also been told that the male will eat the babies. I seem to remember that the males do eat the babies but I would like to know for sure. Please help! Thanks

Not to sure how to tell the difference, but it is usually the female that will eat the babies if they are handled or if it is defective.

I use to raise teddy bear hampsters. To tell the sex you would need to pick the hampster up by the nape of the neck and look at it's underside, there is a definite difference between the male and the female. If it's female you should see it's teets. Also, both the male and the female will eat the young. The female will eat them if they aren't healthy, the male however will eat them just because he can. I use to seperate them until the babies were a few weeks old and moving around the cage alot. Also, it is best not to handle the babies too much until they are older and weened from the mother. If you must handle them use a cotton glove.

The way you can tell the difference between the male and female is by laying them on there backs and pushing on their stomachs lightly. If a little red rocket pops out then you have yourself a boy, if nothing comes out then its a girl and the mothers will eat her babies if she has to many to take care of, if she is to young to know better and is inexperienced, or if they are affective or dead. They eat there babies because it will give them protein and will help them recover faster. It is natural for them to do this so don't worry.
