In The Grimms' Story "Hans In Luck," What Is Hans's Luck?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Hans has completed his service and is rewarded with a large lump of silver. As he walks towards his mother's house, he meets a man who offers to sell Hans the horse for the silver. Hans agrees, tries to ride the horse, can't manage it and is relieved when a passing farmer offers to swap it for a cow. He later exchanges the cow for a pig, and the pig for a goose, each time believing that he has made a very clever bargain. Finally he is persuaded to sell the goose for a millstone, which the stone's owner tells him will provide him with unlimited wealth. Hans walks along, carrying the stone, and soon becomes exhausted from its weight. He is quite miserable until, when he stops to drink from a stream, the stone falls into the water. Hans is now free of its weight; weping tears of joy, he leaps up and goes cheerfully home to his mother.
