2 ideas....depends on how much time you have before the party.
1) declare it to be (the guest of honor's name) Day. Have friends come dressed as their best/worst interpretation of the honoree. Find a good photo, blow it up and create face masks of the honoree for guests to hold for photos and as the honoree arrives.
2)"The Blackmail Ball" Mail funny photographs of the honoree with the invitations, asking the guests to tell a funny or outlandish (maybe true, maybe not) story about the guest of honor. Decorate with photographs/photo collages of the guest of honor. In 50 years....there can be a lot of crazy stories!

Throw Like A Nice Casual Party. What A 50 Year Old Would Like.

How about a special meal cooked either by you personally or take the birthday person to a special restaurant.  You could contact friends & relatives and ask that they all send cards with a nice memory enclosed.  If you want to go the big $ amount, ask several people that are special to the birthday person to participate by having them at a restaurant when you arrive with the guest of honor...you pay the bill.  One single flower for each year (50) of the person's life would be nice gesture.  BTW, there are wholesale flower places that will sell that many to you at a discount.  A special book with a sweet moving sentiment written by you to the recipient would be very nice also.  Another idea is a hand written letter detailing the impact that person has had on your life.  It does not have to be an elaborate party/affair; one that says, I care and wish you well is always good!!
