Gymnastics is the name of a sport that concerns the execution of sequences of motions that require many abilities, the principal ones being that of physical strength, flexibility, balance as well as kinaesthetic knowledge to do actions such as handstands, aerials, forward rolls etc. It evolved from beauty practices which were devised by the ancient Greeks, also comprising of skills needed to mount and to dismount from a horse etc. In olden times the term referred to exercise performed by nude men in the gymnasium, which was seen as a site for mental and physical learning.

Gymnastics rapidly declined due to the abolishment of the Olympics, as well as the derogatory label put on it by the Christian Church. However the gymnastic torch was rekindled when two physical educators by the names of Gutsmuth and Jahn devised exercise techniques through apparatus which is regarded to be the birth of modern gymnastics.
