I dont think it reduces CO2 emmissions that much, if at all.

The energy required to charge the battery in a hybrid comes from an electricity generating station which probably burns fossil fuels anyway, and alot of that energy is wasted along the way due to heat loss (not all the energy in the steam is converted to electrical energy by the turbines, heat is lost in electrical cables, and when charging the hybrid battery itself).

Hydrogen fuel cells aren't much that efficient, because to obtain the hydrogen and oxygen in their pure form so that they can combust, requires electrical energy too.

So my guess is that companies in the automobile industry have latched onto this idea of lower carbon dioxide emmisions, and used it as a marketing ploy to sell hybrid cars, which really aren't lowering CO2 emissions when all the factors are looked at in detail.

People need to ignore the hype and marketing, and look at this from a scientific perspective.

Yes the hybrid cars are really expensive but they are fuel efficient and they also help in reducing CO2. In many developing companies it has introduced as environmental protection laws.

Simple answer. No they are not good for the environment. But they are BETTER THAN conventional cars in the urban driving situation. Think of it this way, the input energy is still coming from the oily stuff you get from the petrol station. However these Hybrid cars tend to use the fuel more efficiently in 'stop start' driving conditions.
      So Conclusion.
The Do Emit/ Produce Carbon (but less than equiv. Conventional car.)
and you might have to own the car for quite a few years to get 'pay back'
