Was Stonehenge Built By Druids?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

No. From about the 17th century on, it was commonly believed that Stonehenge had been built by the druids but radiocarbon dating methods used in the 1950s proved that construction of the monument had begun in about 3000 B.C. This was before the Celts, or their priestly class, the druids, had even come to Britain. It's not known who built Stonehenge because we know very little about Britain in that time period. It is, of course, possible that the druids did use Stonehenge in their ceremonies, however, even if they were not its original builders. The corpse of a beheaded man was found during excavation of the site in the 1920s and some have speculated that he had been a victim of a human sacrifice. In the modern age, groups of self-proclaimed druids began holding ceremonies at the site at least as early as the 19th century and perhaps earlier.
