How Can I Use Horseradish For Medicinal Purposes?

Answer Question

Horseradish is diaphoretic, diuretic, expectorant, and stomachic.  It is good for colds, coughs, sore throats, and lung congestion.  It also stimulates appetite.

Use the fresh root and prepare a syrup by grating to make 2 loosely packed cups of horseradish.  Soak this in enough honey to just cover and steep for 4-8 hours.  Strain the mixture, then add a little water to the strained-out horseradish and simmer it in a pot for 10 minutes.  Strain the horseradish out again and add the liquid to the honey mixture.  Take 1 teaspoon 3 times per day for hoarseness and colds.

Externally, chopped or grated horseradish can be applied as a plaster or a compress for sprains and stiffness.  Be sure to check for skin irritation and remove the horseradish if pronounced redness occurs.
