Water is an essential ingredient of animal and plant life. The impurities present in water vary greatly from one place to another. In addition to the impurities which cause the hardness, varying amounts of sodium salts, the silica, alumina, iron or the manganese may also be present in water. Other impurities that may also be present in water are suspended insoluble water (turbidity), organic matter, and colour and dissolved gases such as carbondioxide, nitrogen and the hydrogen sulphite etc. thus raw or impure water is subjected to the purification process by which the suspended particles, the colour, the odour, and the bacteria are removed. Water is more important than the food. Deprivation of the water brings death much more quickly then that of the food. The chlorination is probably the best and the cheapest method of sterilization of water and it is the most effective in destroying the pathogenic. For chlorination, the liquid chlorine may be added directly in the municipal water. Boiling water for about fifteen to thirty minutes destroys all the disease causing the bacteria and is one of the reliable methods for the water sterilization. Water has many domestic industrial and agricultural uses. Water is a covalent molecular compound.
