What Year Did Brian Clough Become Manager Of Derby County?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Brian Clough became manager of Derby County in June 1967, after leaving Harltepool United to manage the Rams.

Clough stayed at Derby County for just over six years, taking over whilst the club was playing its football in the old second division.  After an indifferent first season in which Derby finished eighteenth, Clough then improved the side drastically in the close season, in preparation for the 1968-69 season.

Derby stormed the second division that year, winning the title, with an impressive points tally of sixty three points. In their forty two league matches that season, Derby won twenty six, drew eleven and lost only five.

After gaining promotion to England's top division, Clough finished fourth in his first season as manager in the top flight, and ninth in his second season, with Clough eventually winning the old first division in only his third full season in the division.
