The Bournemouth War Memorial is located in the city of Bournemouth in England. Bournemouth is a large town on the coast of southwest England. Bournemouth is now famous as a seaside resort. It is a unitary borough located in the ceremonial county of Dorset and the historic county of Hampshire in the region of southwest England. The administrative centre of Bournemouth is Bournemouth. It covers a total surface area of approximately 46.18 square kilometres. According to the 2005 census figures of population, the population of Bournemouth is estimated to be about 163, 600.
The Bournemouth War Memorial was installed in the year 1921. In 1921, the Borough Council of Bournemouth moved its registered headquarters to the Mont Dore Hotel. The Mont Dore Hotel is situated adjacent to the site of the War Memorial, and still stands at the same location even today. The other prominent construction work undertaken in the area at that point of time was that of Saint Stephen's Road Bridge. The War Memorial was installed as a mark of recognition of the municipal identity of the area. The design of the two lions (one asleep and the other awake and roaring) were inspired by the lions that guard the tomb of Pope Clement XIII. The tomb of the Pope was designed by Antonio Cavona, and the Bournemouth War Memorial was designed by Albert Edward Shervey, the deputy architect of the town.
