    Turks and Caicos is a British dependency of West Indies. It is contained with two small island groups. The dependency is situated at the southern end of the Bahamas. The Turks group is made of three parts; there are Grand Turk, Salt Cay and Lesser Cay.

    The Caicos group  consists of six major parts and several smaller cays. The large parts are South Caicos, East Caicos, Middle or Grand Caicos, North Caicos, Provident ales as well as West Caicos. The seat of government is situated at Cockburn Town in Grand Turk Island.

    The Spanish explorer Juan Ponce De Leon discovered the islands in the year  1512; in that time the islands were occupied by the Indians. In the year of 1678, a group of British colonists came from Bermuda. At first the islands were under the rule of the Bahamas. It was added to Jamaica as a colony of the same in the year of 1874. It became a crown colony from 1962. The area was under the Bahamas government from 1965 to 1973.

    A new constitution was taken for the Turks and Caicos in the year of 1988. According to the cencus report of the year 2002, its population was estimated 18,738. Tourism and offshore financial services are the major industries of the Turks and Caicos.
