For the first time in the history of India, a political party of 'untouchables', which constitutes the lowest caste in accordance with the norms of Hinduism, won the majority of seats in the assembly in the recently held elections in Uttar Pradesh, which is India's largest state with respect to popularity. The BSP or more lucidly the Bahujan Samaj Party won 206 out of the 403 seats in the assembly marking a tremendous victory in the state, whose population of 170 million people is even more than the combined population figures of Australia and Russia. The Bahujan Samaj Party's prime quest revolves around fighting for the rights of Dalits (untouchables) as the party was formed on the philosophy on the equality of the people be may from any caste. The party chief Mayawati who was a teacher and later on turned politician, was elected as chief minister, which contains about 48 ministers, which are inclusive of people from the upper caste. She was sworn as Chief Minister in the state capital of Lucknow.
