When Was The Iranian Revolution?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Iranian Revolution happened in 1978, with the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeni taking control of the country in 1979, establishing an Islamic Republic.
The deposed Shah, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi had been a progressive moderniser who had been a strong supporter of the United States and who had sought to capitalise on the very extensive oil reserves which Iran had.
However, he alienated many within the more conservative, Shi'ite Islamics.  Khomeni was one of these, but he had been exiled by the Shah.
During the 1970's public protests started over the draconian measures and tactics of the police and these were sized upon by the Shi'ites who whipped up public opinion against the Shah.
These protests came to a head in 1978, when there was a growing feeling of anger and antipathy towards western values within the Islamic world and the Shah was seen as too close to the Americans and was forced to flee to the US for safety.
