What's The Easiest Way To Swallow Pills?

Answer Question

2 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

If you think about it, most of us can swallow a much bigger piece of food than any tablet or capsule we might want to take, so why is swallowing pills so difficult sometimes?

With some people it's psychological.  If they have had trouble swallowing a pill before, they fear they will again.  Some people associate pills with illness or feeling rubbish.  So just the sight of the pill brings the anxiety back.

Pills are a bit difficult because they require good mouth and throat control.  A person (especially a child) with a developmental delay associated with swallowing or speaking is most likely to find swallowing pills hard.

There's nothing wrong with chewable pills or liquids, if they make your life easier.

That said, if you're stuck with pills or just want to get over  a hang-up:

Put the pill at the very back of the tongue, and take a moderate mouthful of water.  Pill should go down easily for almost everybody.

Make movements with your mouth and tongue to position the medicine near the back of the tongue.  Take a small drink of liquid and swallow carefully.  Be ready to take another small drink immediately.
