What Is The Portuguese Name For The Portuguese Pointer?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

In its native land the Portuguese Pointer is known as the Perdigueiro, a much prettier name than its English equivalent most people would agree.

In looks, the Perdigueiro resembles the Spanish Navarro and has more than a passing similarity to the Great Dane too. Perhaps not as handsome as, say, the English Pointer and some others of the Pointer ilk, the Perdigueiro is a powerfully robust and industrious dog.

In Portugal the breed is used a gun dog for most of the national game of that country, and is popular with hunters, sporting estates and in towns. The Club does Cacadores Portugueses takes an active interest in the breed and many Dog Shows now run Perdigueiro classes too.

Standing at between 24 and 25 inches tall, the Perdigueiro cannot be described as dainty, with adults weighing in about 55 to 60 lbs. Their colouring is either fawn, sedge or biscuit with red or tan ears and head markings.

Like many pointers and setters, the coat is very short and smooth. The ears are large, pendant and set low.
