What Is The Eligibility To Be Nominated For An Oscar?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

The Oscars are the Academy Awards for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.  Each year they award Oscars for outstanding contributions to the film industry.
The eligibility criteria rests on the film, not the individuals involved.
The criteria is quite bureaucratic, but ensures only 'significant films' can be nominated for an Oscar.
The main criteria are that the film has to have been released within the last 12 months.  It also has to be over 40 minutes long, in order to qualify as a feature film.  It also has to have run consecutively for 7 days (thereby eliminating flops being nominated).  It has to have been publicly shown and audiences need to have paid to see the film.
If an actor/actress etc has starred in, worked on or produced/directed a film meeting this and other criteria then they can be nominated for an Oscar.  Foreign films meeting the criteria are also eligible, providing that English subtitles are provided.
