The etymology of ketchup suggests that the meaning of the word ketchup comes in English Dictionary (A New Dictionary of the Terms Ancient and Modern of the Canting Crew, 1690) during the late 17th century, where it was defined as "a high East-India Sauce". It was first known as catsup and then it changed into ketchup. The word Min Nan (kê-chiap) in Chinese means "brine of fish" – it is assumed that the word catsup was derived from it. Most probably, it came into English word through Malay kichap during 1711, when it was actually spelled catchup. Afterwards, the spelling changed into catsup when Jonathon Swift, in 1730, spelled it for the first time. In USA, it is still available in the same name. But in UK, the name transformed into ketchup during 18th century.
