What Causes Fear?
What would cause one to have a fear of heights? I use to do crazy things as a kid jumping off high places, but now, i have this awful phobia. Anything to do with heights, and i panic. I can't understand why this happened.

An emotional action that you make in response to threat and danger is known as fear. It is basically a survival phenomena which occurs as a result of stimulus and pain. A form of fear which is distinguishable from anxiety is known as Phobia. It is very common among the people and there is a list of phobias and according to NIMH report, 8.7% and 18.1% of Americans suffer from phobias.
You have height phobia which is known as Acrophobia or Altophobia. There are various reasons because of which you may get this phobia like combination of external events and internal predispositions. It can also develop as a result of some triggering event or a trauma. Therefore, do not worry about it because it is the most common type of phobia.

The cure for phobia's is to put yourself in that situation voluntarily with the mentality that your going to stop being afraid and heed to your reasoning ability.
Shutting out that fear and realizing your just scared but not in danger is important, being able to differentiate fear and reality is a big deal.
What if you God forbid were in a situation of danger and it involved a high place (like your roof) and your fear caused you to have a panic attack and you lost your footing and fell.
Having your head is important especially in frightful situations.
It's a bit like being calm in angry situations, being calm when your angry can prevent problems from doing something stupid just because you were angry, but later on realizing that it wasn't necessary.
So I'm suggesting to you, that if its really bad that you should not let the fear develop and eventually get worse, i would hate to afraid when its not even necessary like being in a high-rise building looking out a window and enjoying the view. Etc.

Thank you so much. I loved your answer. Unfortunately, I do not enter high rise building for this reason. I have tried to overcome this, but it feels as if I am not totally in control of my feelings, even though I know there is no concern for worry. My workmates and family know i have this fear and never put me in a situation that would bring this on.

Thanks, Amber. That was a great answer. I just couldn't understand how I could have this fear after spending my younger years jumping off high things.
