How Have Legal Constraints Contributed To The Decline Of Investigative Journalism?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Investigative journalism has seen a decline both in quality and quantity in recent years. One of the possible reasons for this is that potential libel suits due to inaccuracies may hold back news organisations from publishing stories.

For example, in February 2000, the News of the World exposed The Cook Report as a "cynical sham". The report said the programme's researchers had admitted that stories had been stitched up. Members of Cook's off screen team were alleged to have given a boy a torch and gloves to steal from a school and told art thieves the easiest way to take a painting. However, Cook won his court case against the allegations and forced the News of the World to admit to being inaccurate. The case not only revealed inaccurate journalism, but also tarnished a very successful investigative journalism programme. It was an example of bad investigative journalism bringing down good.
