      It depends on the type of waste.

      If radioactive, then vitrification (encapsulation) is about the only method.

      Biological/human waste can go several places. For one, it can be put in a digester that will break it down into more basic components and can then be used as fertilizer, and sometime fuel. It can also go to water recycling plants and be purified. Other organic waste is a bit discretionary (usually going into landfills, as well).

      Non-organic waste (such as plastic) can often, though not always, be recycled, yet often aren't. So they end up in landfills. Landfills are designed to prevent the methane the waste produces from getting into the air (as well as keep the smell at bay). They also have an empty layer beneath them to allow all the Leachate that comes out of the waste to be sucked out and sent elsewhere.
