Where Is The Hoover Dam?

Answer Question

Hoover Dam suppresses the Colorado River in Black Canyon, 30 miles southwest of Las Vegas, Nevada.
It was built in the height of America's Great Depression economic slowdown, providing more than 16,000 badly needed jobs.  It is considered one of the premier examples of Art Deco architecture in the U.S. At its opening in 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt declared, "I came, I saw, I was conquered as everyone will be who sees for the first time this great feat of mankind."'
At the time, it was the single-largest structure, with more masonry than the Great Pyramid at Giza. Now it is the work's 18th tallest dam, at 726.4 feet.
More than 6.5 million tons of concrete was poured for Hoover Dam. In 1936, people feared that its great weight would displace the Earth on its axis.
The dam is 1,244 feet across the top, and 660 feet at its base, tapering to 45 feet at the top.
Hoover Dam formed Lake Mead. Tours of the dam and paddling on the lake are popular day trips for visitors from Las Vegas.
