What Is The Climate Of The Gobi Desert Like?

Answer Question

7 Answers - Sort by: Date | Rating

The climate in the Gobi Desert is VERY dry.  You can find out more about this in a good geography text.  Typically, deserts are dry, sandy, with specialized flora and fauna adapted for arid living (plants such as cactus).

The climate of the Gobi Desert is highly varied on account of its large size and regions situated at different altitudes; the temperature variations are extreme in nature with some parts of the desert having maximum temperatures of 45 degree C in summer in the month of July and minimum temperature as low as -40 degree C in winter in the month of January.

The south eastern parts of the desert receives moderate rainfall mostly during the summer months while the winter months are characterized by extreme dryness; sandstorms are a common feature in the Gobi desert especially in the early part of the summer season. The major regions comprising the Gobi Desert are the Eastern Gobi Desert Steppe, the Alashan Plateau Semi desert, Gobi Lakes Valley Desert Steppe, the Junggar Basin Semi Desert and the Taklamakan Desert.

The Gobi has cold winters (-40 degrees C/-40 degrees F) and short, hot, summers (40 degrees C/104 degrees F). The Gobi gets what little rain there is in summer in short, hard, bursts, and a little bit of snow in winter, and of course the total being less than 250mm, or it wouldn't be classified as a desert.

So, is the Gobi Desert a winter desert, or an arid desert, or a subtropical desert??? Btw there actually are deserts that have more than 250mm of rain and they are still classified as deserts!!!

Not all deserts are hot and sandy. A desert is classified as a desert because it receives less than 250mm of rain annually. The Gobi can actually be classified as a cold desert sometimes.

        Now for the climate:
The Gobi has cold winters (-40 degrees C/-40 degrees F) and short, hot, summers (40 degrees C/104 degrees F). The Gobi gets what little rain there is in summer in short, hard, bursts, and a little bit of snow in winter, and of course the total being less than 250mm, or it wouldn't be classified as a desert.
