Do I Need A Professional Training To Become A Theatre Director?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Many people believe theatre directors are born not made.  This is foolishness, the skills, knowledge and experience that a successful director needs is not possible without some form of training and/or education, whether this be formal, informal or simple learned on the job (via a traineeship or minor role in a theatre)

Directors should really have a good grasp of the job of the actor.  Otherwise, they tend to ask for results rather than the try to stimulate actors to come up with their own inventions.

Directors need to develop sensitivity to scripts, understanding of how to deconstruct them, appreciate them and be able to stage them with a full working understanding of dramatic action, the conversion of page to stage.

Of course from time to time, someone without any training will shine, but you will usually find that they have received some form of tuition, even if it is simply watching the greats at work.
