Why Do Poets Repeat Words?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

They would like to emphasize the main idea that they want to convey to readers. For instance, Stephen Crane makes use of a verbal irony in repeating that war is kind, war is kind. This helps reinforce the meaning of the poem that is, war is nonsense and those soldiers who have to die in the battlefields are pitiful. Their relatives, mothers, wives and offsprings, are not consolable with the loss. Also repetition is used for musical or prosodic purposes as well. It is like refrains in song now if there are more than one lines repeated.
