I Am 27 Years Old. My Heart Rate During A 30 Minute Workout Was 226. Is That Normal?

Answer Question

Well, just from what you've described... I wouldn't say that it is "normal". From a fitness point of view, your heart rate should be lower than that. If you are at 226, that means your heart is working really hard. Do you have asthma for instance? They say that professional bikers like Lance Armstrong have a resting heart rate of like 35 beats per minute... His workout rate is probably low too.

The heart is a muscle. The more you work it out, the less it has to work. So probably, I would say, try to workout at a intensity that doesn't make your heart rate rise to 226. If I were you, I'd try to aim between 160-180 bpm for the duration of the workout for now.

I do not have asthma, but I do smoke. Do you think I should see a Doctor to get my heart checked, or am I just freaking out! Or of course I should just stop smoking huh?

The smoking would make sense as to why this is happening. Yes, I would try to stop smoking if it is that severe when you workout, if you are able to quit that is. You can see a Doctor too, they have meds to help you quit smoking. I don't think right now it is an issue with your heart as much as it is with belabored breathing causing a higher heart rate (think of it as being on adrenaline).
